Welcome to a celebration of people, light and the stories it reveals.

Away with Renike

On rhythm, routine and collaboration.

[Still] In Progress.
[To be] edited, adjusted, and lived with.

I’ve realised a lot of Home and Away With Friends ends up being about familiarity.
With collaborating, I think a lot about repetition, routine, practice & the small rhythms people build over time.
Both intentionally and without really noticing. This shoot reminded me of riding a bike again after a long hiatus;
A little awkward at first, then suddenly everything starts feeling natural again once you’re moving and you feel that rush.

I hadn’t seen Renike in a while, but once the day started unfolding it felt familiar almost immediately.
Talking, catching up, making photos the same way we used to.There wasn’t much planning beforehand.
I didn’t really have time to fully imagine what the shoot would become before we got there, but I think that’s part of why it worked.

Also, I remember leaving the conversation feeling reaffirmed in the direction I want to take my practice.
Not just aesthetically, but in the way I want to work with people more openness, trust, ambition and more room for moments to develop naturally.

I also remember thinking about how long I’ve known Renike and the things that immediately come to mind are
how funny and goofy she can be, how much she loves dancing and how easy she is to be around.
I like that the images seem to hold some of that naturally, without either of us really forcing it.
Looking back at the images now, I think familiarity is what sits inside them the most.
